Echoes of Legacy

Nusaybah bint Ka’ab (رضي الله عنها)

The Shield of the Prophet ﷺ

@halalbite4soul

Among the dust and blood of Uhud stood a woman—sword in hand, shielding the Prophet ﷺ with her body. Nusaybah bint Ka’ab, also known as Umm ‘Ammarah, was not just a supporter of Islam—she was its defender, in both spirit and battlefield.

Her Legacy of Valor:

One of the First Female Warriors in Islam

At the Battle of Uhud, while many men fled in fear, Nusaybah stood firm, wielding a sword and defending Rasulullah ﷺ with her body. She suffered over 12 wounds in that battle alone.

Swore Allegiance at Aqabah

She was among the very few women who pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ during the early days of Islam in Madinah.

Participated in Major Battles

Including Uhud, al-Yamamah, and others, alongside her sons.

Her Son Was Martyred in Front of Her

Her son Habib ibn Zayd was killed by Musaylimah the Liar, and she later fought in the battle that brought Musaylimah to justice.

Praised by the Prophet ﷺ

Rasulullah ﷺ personally said:

“Whenever I turned to my right or left, I saw Umm ‘Ammarah fighting to protect me.” (Ibn Hajar)

Nusaybah wasn’t seeking fame, recognition, or glory—she stood for iman, truth, and the love of the Prophet ﷺ. Her story teaches us that bravery is not in physical strength alone, but in unshakable conviction and loyalty to Allah and His Messenger.

She shattered expectations and proved that women were not passive observers, but active architects of the early Islamic community.

Nusaybah's sword has long been laid to rest, but her spirit lives on in every believer who stands firm in faith, speaks truth to power, and protects what is sacred. May we carry her courage in our own struggles for justice and deen.
