Title: Ibn al-Haytham — Father of Optics and the Light of Discovery

@halalbite4soul | Echoes of Legacy Series

In the golden age of Islamic civilization, one man’s quest to understand light transformed the world of science forever. Meet Ibn al-Haytham, also known in the West as Alhazen — the visionary scholar who illuminated both the eye and the mind.

Biography & Contributions:

Full Name: Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham

Born: 965 CE, Basra, in present-day Iraq

Died: 1040 CE, Cairo, Egypt

Ibn al-Haytham was a polymath who contributed significantly to optics, mathematics, astronomy, engineering, and philosophy. He is most renowned for his pioneering work in optics and vision, especially his revolutionary book Kitab al-Manazir (Book of Optics), which challenged centuries of Greek thought.

Instead of believing that vision came from rays emitted by the eyes (as proposed by Ptolemy and Euclid), Ibn al-Haytham demonstrated that vision occurs when light rays reflect off an object and enter the eye. His scientific method of experimentation, hypothesis, and observation is seen as a forerunner of the modern scientific method.

Among his many achievements:

-Explained refraction, reflection, and lenses

-Developed the camera obscura, laying the groundwork for photography

-Authored over 200 works, many of which influenced European scholars like Roger Bacon and Kepler

-Advocated for critical thinking and truth through empirical evidence

-Contributed to mathematics, including geometry and number theory

Legacy & Impact:

Ibn al-Haytham's work crossed civilizations and centuries. His Book of Optics was translated into Latin and influenced scholars throughout the Renaissance. He is often credited as "the father of modern optics", and some regard him as the first true scientist due to his methodological approach.

UNESCO even declared 2015 the "International Year of Light" in celebration of his legacy.

From gazing into the stars to studying the bending of light, Ibn al-Haytham reminds us that curiosity, humility, and persistence lead to enlightenment. In a world still seeking clarity, his legacy teaches us that light — both physical and spiritual — begins with seeking truth.

Let us walk in the footsteps of those who illuminated the world not just with knowledge, but with sincere intention and service to humanity.
