Halal Recipe: Turkish Lavaş (Balloon Bread)

Turkish Lavaş (Balloon Bread) is actually quite simple to make at home, even with basic tools.

It’s easier than most people think—just needs a very hot pan or oven to get that nice "puff" effect!

Let’s get you the easy halal, budget version ready for your day.

Recipe: Turkish Lavaş (Balloon Bread)

Time: 45 mins (including resting) | Makes: 4 breads

Ingredients:

-2 cups all-purpose flour

-1 tsp instant yeast

-1/2 tsp sugar

-1/2 tsp salt

-3/4 cup warm water

-1 tbsp oil (for the dough)

Instructions:

1. Activate yeast:

Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Make dough:

Add flour, salt, and oil. Knead until smooth and soft (8–10 minutes).

Cover and rest the dough for 30 minutes until it rises slightly.

3. Shape:

Divide into 4 balls. Roll each out thin (around 3mm thick) — like a chapati.

4. Cook:

Heat a pan (or oven) until very hot (important!).

Place the bread on the dry pan, cook 30–40 seconds until bubbles form, flip once, and it should puff into a balloon!

5. Serve immediately:

Best eaten warm with soups, dips, kebabs, or just a little olive oil and za'atar.

Tips for perfect puff:

Pan must be very hot (no oil needed).

Don't press down while cooking. Let it puff naturally.

If it doesn't puff perfectly, don't worry—it'll still be soft and delicious!
